Talking with clients, one of the things I’ve noticed is that some don’t understand how their website is actually made available to visitors.
I’ve also discovered that the relationship between the main elements is often illustrated using the analogy of a house, in which:
– the house itself is the website,
– the land on which it’s built is the hosting (server),
– the house address is the domain name,
– the street which gives access to the site is the internet.
In my version, the analogy is further extended to include the role of the website creator in uploading files to the host server – which I illustrate as post being delivered to the house.
The same route is, of course, used by visitors to the house / website.
